环球时报驻美国特约记者王启超报道，当地时间1月12日下午(北京时间13日凌晨)，加勒比岛国海地当天发生里氏7.3级强烈地震。这是当地两百年来最严重的地震。
据报道，海地首都太子港的主要建筑，包括总统府、政府大楼、大饭店及无数商店，全都坍塌。据台“中广新闻网”称，当时从空中透过卫星俯瞰，海地首都上空被建筑倒塌扬起的厚重灰尘笼罩，宛如发生大爆炸一般。
当地民众说，发生第一起主震时，大楼建筑摇晃了将近40秒。一名在当地的美国慈善机构工作人员表示，灾区断电，数以千计的民众被埋在瓦砾堆中，还有劫后余生的灾民坐在大马路上，眼看家园全毁，不知所措。
